Theo Cray教授は前作の事件で行方不明者の捜索を特殊能力で解決するというような評判が立って依頼者が押し寄せて困るので、大学の仕事も中断し、捜索依頼をずーっと断ってきた。ある晩自宅を訪ねてきたのは9年前から行方不明の息子を探してほしいと必死の父親で、Theoはこの依頼を受けることにした。手掛かりは子供が描いた人物のスケッチと行方が分からなくなったロスアンジェルスの近郊ではToy Manと呼ばれる男がいるとの都市伝説があり、行方不明になった子供が複数いることだった。
警察やFBIが介入したりするのを出し抜いて活躍するのが爽快だ。ビッグデータ分析、ウーバーのサービス、テスラの自動車など最新の要素が登場するのも楽しい。前作の登場人物がどんどん出てくるし、事件の顛末も語られるので、このシリーズは順番に読まないと訳が分からなくなるので注意。
第3作はMurder Theoryでもう読んであるのだが、感想は後日。

Theo Cray教授はモンタナの山中での調査からモーテルに返ってきたところを警察に拘束される。かつての教え子が近くの森で惨殺されたので事情聴取するとのこと。結果直ぐに解放され、教え子は熊に遣られたと結論付けられた。それに納得できないTheoは独自に調査を開始する。天才科学者Theoは最新のコンピュータを駆使する生物学者で、犯罪のビッグデータから、類似犯罪の仮説を作り、検証していくのだが、警察は犯人が熊か、Theoそのものではないかと疑いを抱く。
　乗りが軽いTheoが楽しく、天才的分析力でメリメリと犠牲者を発見していくのが痛快だ。これはTheo Crayシリーズの第1弾で、もう4冊出ているから楽しみだ。実は第2弾はもう手に入れてあってただいま読書中なのだ。
